Nagami Kumquat Tree For Sale
Nagami kumquat is probably a valid species (Fortunella margarita) and originates from China, where it is a symbol of good luck for the Chinese New Year. In the United States, it is used in warmer regions as a Christmas decoration, adorning wreaths, garlands, and arrangements with dark green foliage and small, colorful fruit.
Like most kumquats, Nagami as a plant stays fairly small, functioning more as a large shrub than as a tree, though very old specimens can attain tree size. Leaves are medium and oblong in shape, dark green and very attractive. Old-line budded trees are practically thornless, making Nagami kumquat a handsome ornamental.
Fruit are also oblong in shape, distinctive for kumquats (which tend to be round) and a bright orange color at peak ripeness. Ripe fruit hang for months on the plant if not frozen off. It’s not unusual to see Nagami kumquats in full bloom accompanied by a last year’s fruit.
The juice of Nagami fruit is sour, and the peel is sweet-sour, making eating Nagami kumquats an intense experience. Some people love the taste of Nagami; others prefer sweeter kumquats such as Meiwa or Fukushu. Like other kumquats and in stark contrast to most other citrus, Nagami enters a period of profound dormancy in winter and will not break dormancy until the onset of relatively hot weather, making it less prone to damage from spring freezes.
As an edible ornamental, Nagami kumquat is hard to beat.
Our trees are grafted with mature buds so our trees will fruit quicker.
